SSH No.03 by Ryue Nishizawa opens May 2023

Shishi-Iwa House Karuizawa is delighted to announce the opening of SSH No.03 by Ryue Nishizawa in May 2023.

It is the third property to open at Shishi-Iwa House Karuizawa. Just a minute away on foot are SSH No.01 and SSH No.02, both designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban.

Ryue Nishizawa, a Pritzker Prize winner and co-founder of award-winning practice SANAA, was inspired by the idea of creating an architectural transparency that lifts boundaries between humans and nature. He designed both the structure and interiors, ensuring a seamless conceptual flow throughout.

Rooted in traditional architectural methodologies, SSH No.03 by Ryue Nishizawa consists of a meditative, floating network of ten pavilions, housing ten rooms and one villa, all interconnected by a series of corridors, walkways, platforms and Japanese courtyard gardens.

Dark charred wood facades give way to light-flooded interiors, which are wrapped in unprecedented quantities of pure Japanese hinoki cypress wood, alongside mid-century furniture icons and classic ukiyo-e woodblock prints.

Facilities include an ochanoma Lounge on two levels, for guests to enjoy seasonal teas and sweets. The Bathhouse is also available, by reservation, alongside a dedicated wellness room for shiatsu and ayurvedic massages. The Teahouse offers traditional tea ceremony and meditation. There is also a business meeting room.
